What does it mean to be healthy?
I am sitting here thinking about all of you and wondering what your definition of “healthy” is. How do you define it? I am not 100% sure I have a definition of healthy, and I am your health coach. 🙂
The thing is, health encompasses so many things that I can’t define it in a simple way. Yes, there are measurements for physical health. We can be at a healthy weight. We can have a healthy BMI. We can have great blood pressure. All of those matter, but they are not the only measurements of health. There is mental health. Financial health. Relationship health. Career health. I could keep going, but I think you see what I mean.
So what is health to you? For me, health is all of those in balance. I want each of you to have the best health measurements possible, but if you focus only on one and forget the others—is that health? If you exercise and eat all the right stuff and, because of that, don’t go out with friends is that healthy? I don’t think so. Yes, I know if you go out to a restaurant you may not get the best, freshest, most organic food possible. But you get community and companionship and emotional health when you live life with friends. Do I recommend you do that daily? No. That would be putting relationship health above physical health. What about career above family? I don’t think that is a healthy choice but many people struggle with this also.
For me everything has to be in balance. The goal of good health isn’t necessarily a perfect body so much as being the best person you can be. The one that loves themselves, feels good in life, has enough energy to accomplish the goals they set for themselves and feels proud of the accomplishments they have made and will continue to make. If I have to narrow it down, this is my definition of health: when your physical body, mental and emotional state are all working at 100%, then you are healthy. And when you are healthy, you can accomplish whatever you want to do.
