It matters! Have you ever noticed that the people you surround yourself with begin to think like you? They care about what you care about, they have the same sayings, and they just “get you.” Well, what if the truth is you become like the five people you spend the most time with? What if you are the one conforming to them, not them to you? I see it in my high-school age son. When he is in a group of friends that value grades and hard work, he works hard. When he spends time with a group that is more about fun and making good grades doesn’t matter, he stops working so hard. He is still the same smart kid, but the group he is in influences to his motivation. I can’t force him to be with the group I want him to be with. It’s his choices. I think this concept applies to everything in our lives. When we are around those that value being frugal, we are frugal. It validates our actions to be with others that value the same thing. And those that are frugal but start hanging out with a group that likes to spend have an internal conflict, I believe. They either stick to what they value, they change their value, or they change the group they associate with. My personal belief is there is no greater stress than conflict with yourself. The conflict with your head and your heart is unpleasant! That conflict can be made worse when we get in a group that we want to be a part of or liked by but they don’t support what you know or feel to be right. That is hard!
Why does this matter to your health? If you have made the decision to be healthier, whatever that means to YOU, and you are in a group that does not value health, for you it will be easy to let that “healthy mindset” slip away. However, when you are in a group that values healthy eating, exercise, and healthy living you can easily make changes to be healthy. If you have decided to be healthy and your group isn’t supportive, reach out for support. You may not be able or willing to change your group, but you can reach out for support. I will be your support! You are worth being healthy for! Success comes easier to those that have support for their success. That applies to a business owner that has a mentor or a new mother that has an experienced mother to call or a person wanting to get healthy having a coach/mentor to reach out to. Traveling your journey without support is lonely and difficult and fortunately not necessary. Look for a new friend that also values what you value or want to value and spend time with them. Remember, as Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” So select whom you spend your time with wisely. Do they support or hinder your goals?
